Alumni Association President Matthew Browning ‘00 Invites You to Be Part of a Yearlong Celebration

May 7th, 2012 | No Comments | Posted in Marian University

Dear Fellow Alumni,

If you haven’t heard yet, Marian University is celebrating a special milestone this year: 75 years in Indianapolis. Yes, it was 75 years ago that Mother Mary Clarissa Dillhoff and the Sisters of St. Francis decided to move their fledgling college from the sleepy town of Oldenburg, Indiana to the largest metropolitan area in the state.

It is impossible to overstate what a bold move this was, particularly because the decision was made in the midst of the Great Depression. Seventy-five years later, our alma mater is still making bold moves, including becoming a university, starting a football program, and preparing to open a medical school.

It’s impossible to deny how far we’ve come, and yet, each time I step on campus or meet with a student to help them prepare for a future job interview, I’m reminded that caring continues to be at the heart our alma mater.

This is a historic moment, and I’d like to encourage you to be a part of it. Here are some ways to participate:

  • Join us at the 75th anniversary homecoming, September 21-23.  This year’s theme is “Cheers to 75 Years” and is a great opportunity to return to campus and see all the wonderful progress, including a brand new residence hall nearing completion.
  • Invest in a commemorative 75th anniversary brick. For only $20.83 per month (based on a 36-month pledge), you can leave a permanent legacy on campus while investing in the next generation of Marian University students.  In addition to the commemorative brick, you will receive two complimentary invitations for you and a guest to attend Marian University’s 75th Anniversary Gala in downtown Indianapolis on October 19, 2012. Secure your commemorative brick and your invitations to the gala at www.marian.edu/75thbrick.
  • Become a fan of Marian University’s Facebook page and share your Marian University stories online. What a great way to connect with fellow classmates. If you married another Marian University graduate, like I did, then we especially want to hear from you, as Marian University will be highlighting all those “Marian matches” this fall.

Join in the celebration. Share your stories, consider making a gift in honor of the 75th anniversary, and be part of the special events surrounding this milestone. There is no better time than now to show the world how proud you are to be a KNIGHT!

Best wishes,

Matthew Browning ‘00
President

The Season of Giving

December 7th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Marian University

It’s the season of giving. That’s something we hear so often that it’s easy to forget exactly what that means. But giving, making a sacrifice for the benefit of someone else, is something truly special.

In the third century, a wealthy young man who lived in what is now known as Turkey was so inspired by Christ that he gave away his entire inheritance to help the needy, the sick, and the suffering. The generous nature and humility of St. Nicholas inspires us to put others first at this time of year, and every Christmas, we hear stories of those inspired to make a difference in the lives of others with gifts, both large and small. Anonymous givers quietly drop gold coins into Salvation Army buckets, and people donate brand new toys to toy drives for children they don’t even know.

A similar thing happens here at Marian University when donors send checks to support scholarships for students that they will probably never meet. Most of our students are here because of the generosity of Marian University’s donors. That’s another statement you may hear a lot, but take a moment and think about that. A donation to Marian University helps a student get a college education. That is a meaningful gift. It is a gift that will change someone’s life.

I hope that you are inspired by St. Nicholas to give, to make a sacrifice for the benefit of someone else. Somewhere out there, a high school student has applied to Marian University and is wondering if he will be able to afford to attend. Make an online gift and change his life.

Alumni Directory Update

December 7th, 2011 | No Comments | Posted in Marian University

For the past year, Marian University has been in the process of working with Publishing Concepts (PCI) on a brand new Alumni Directory. Our thanks to our alumni for their assistance as we’ve updated alumni data and collected information for our new directory.

We’re nearing the end of this project, which means the directory is currently being printed and will be distributed soon. This directory will be a special 75th anniversary edition, celebrating the past 75 years of Marian College, now Marian University, and will feature a custom introduction with beautiful photographs.

If you’ve ordered a copy of the new alumni directory, you should receive it by mail in the next 30 days. Questions or comments can be directed to the Office of Alumni Relations at alumni@marian.edu or 317.955.6245.
